Summary

Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Immunology, Allergy and Retrovirology Service at Texas Children’s Hospital is seeking a highly motivated, responsible, and organized individual to join the HIV Research Program. We seek a professional nurse who possesses basic general knowledge of nursing practices, provides professional nursing skills involving Good Clinical Practice (GCP) in clinical research and is responsible for following procedures as described in research protocols and according to site and sponsor Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Duties include screening, enrolling participants, obtaining blood and other specimens for tests, administering medications, recording data for research analysis, and maintaining patient records. The nurse should ensure accurate data collection, documentation, and is responsible for organization and attention to safety for research visits.

 

The Research Nurse I will be responsible for coordinating day to day activities for a number of research protocols in the HIV Research Program and especially in the Adolescent Trials Network. The ATN network, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) addresses two critical pediatric HIV research questions:

  • The prevention of HIV in people from at-risk communities.
  • The management of HIV infection in adolescents and young adults.

 

This position will be working with adolescents and young adults from the LGBTQ community and will need to provide culturally competent care.

Job Duties

  • Documents clinical research data in electronic data capture (EDC). 
  • Answers queries in accordance with protocol requirements.
  • Provides outreach in the community to enhance enrollment.
  • Regularly provides updates, follow-ups on projects and ensures deadlines are met by all stakeholders as required.
  • Works with Principal Investigator and CRA Regulatory Coordinator on both local, central and commercial Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols, including but not limited to new protocol submission, amendments and renewals.
  • Attends conference calls/answer emails as required by the study sponsor and relay the information to the study staff.
  • May collect, process, ship, and maintain paperwork for blood and/or biological specimens according to procedures outlined in study protocol. 
  • Collects study specimens and check subjects’ vital signs.
  • Performs study related procedures as outlined in the protocols such as administers questionnaires and conducts interviews.
  • Performs responsibilities in a manner that promotes quality and safe patient care and customer service.
  • Adheres to the scope of practices as defined by the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
  • Recruits, screens, enrolls and evaluate patients that participate in NIH funded HIV research studies in children, adolescents and women.
  • Schedules study visits and meetings related to studies.
  • Administers study medications.
  • Abstracts information from medical records according to the protocols.
  • Ensures the clinical studies are conducted in accordance with guidelines of the FDA and other regulatory agencies.
  • Educates patients in significant aspects of study.
  • Serves as a liaison and distributes research information to faculty, research staff, principle investigator, and others as required.
  • Maintains clean and safe work environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. 
  • No experience required.
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
